Slangers’ Dictionary

This page will compile a list of the slang words we all contribute to this site. I will try define each word, the origin, where it is spoken, how it is used in a sentence and also the name of the person that contributed the slang{with permission of course}. I only wish I could provide the accent and tone but I will leave that up to your imagination.

  • SLANGOLOGIST: n: slang-ol-o-gist: 1. a person who specializes in or studies slang{I made this up too}
“An East Coaster born and raised.”
  • EAST COAST SLANGER :n; used to describe a person from the East Coast who talks slang
  • MARITIMER:n/adj: a person from the East Coast
  • “A true Maritimer.”
  • CANT: adj: a secret language spoken in code by a group or a community

”Round Tuit!”

Trans: ”Get around to It!”

  • SOOK: n/v/adj/adv: suk: 1. to sulk or brood { a term common to the East Coast}
  • “Ya big sook”
  • Julian, Riverview
  • EH: interj: aaa; common expression used by east coasters
  • 1. used to ask a question
  • 2. to ask to repeat something
  • 3. just added to the end of all sentences by habit and with inflection
  • “From the East Coast eh!”

“Houze she goin’?”

Origin: Common greeting said on the North Shore,NB
Meaning: “How are you doing?
  • ‘‘3 Squares ‘n a flop!”: origin unknown
  • Meaning: 3 meals and a place to lay yer head
  • ”All ya need to be happy is 3 squares ‘n a flop!” (Norm/Moncton NB)
  • ”That’s a load of malarkey!”: Irish origin
  • Meaning: ”Thats a load of lies!”
  • ”Stay wheres yer too… ’till I comes wheres yer at!”: Nfld origin
  • Meaning:”Stay where you are until I get there.”

  • 1. an endearing slang term in reference to a person from Nova Scotia.
  • ”Aww..yer a Bluenoser!”
  • Holy Jumpins!: Common East Coast expression
  • 1. Wow
  • 2. To express amazement
  • ”Holy Jumpins that hurt!” (Chris/Hillsborough NB)
  • IDUNNO!”: Often heard said on the East Coast
  • Meaning: ”I don’t Know!”
  • ”Ya well…Idunno!” (Kerry/NB)

  • ”Fill Yer Boots!”: Origin: Everywhere you find an East Coaster!
  • Meaning: To tell someone to…”Go to It or Do whatever you want!”
  • GIVE’ ER: adj:
  • Meaning: To encourage one’s very best with enthusiasm.
  • ‘‘Common…give ‘er!’‘
  • ”How ya stickin’ out!” Irish origin
  • Meaning: ”How are you doing!”or ”What are you up to!”
  • 1. An endearing greeting.

  • Origin: French term for a knitted hat.
  • “That’s the warmest tuque!”
